About Suara — Te Fiti Stage

Suara is a music festival in Bali that reworks Balinese tradition through contemporary music and art. Suka Rental — a team behind multimedia and light installations at the Nuanu creative city — brought Wave in to develop a stage concept for their commercial pitch to the festival. The idea was a character in the spirit of the site's large human-like sculptures, tied to Balinese and wider island culture: a goddess from island mythology who fell asleep in the ocean and became an island. Wave built her from woven rattan — a traditional Balinese craft used for ceremonial structures — so the whole stage was recyclable and could be taken down after the festival with no waste. Wave also proposed multimedia-lighting concepts showing the goddess in different states, from wrathful to cosmic to techno. Wave found a contractor and costed the build, but the final client shelved that spot for permanent development, so the stage wasn't produced. The work still drew attention to the atrium at Nuanu and showed the site's potential for a large-scale, long-term art installation and gathering place beyond the festival.
